At one time, the only way to know where fish were biting or
get hints for what kind of bait to use where was to talk to local fishermen who
had already been to that particular area. This could be difficult if you were
going to be fishing somewhere far from where you lived or even out of state.
There wasn't a good way to find out about fishing some other way.
Now there are tools that can tell you this as easily as fishermen can what places are good to fish and what kind of bait you should use. When I go fishing somewhere I am not familiar with; I use a Magellan Exploration to tell me exactly where the fish usually are. It will give me hints on what kind of gear I should be using when I go to a certain area as well.

Fishing Nets Used by My Grandfather
My grandfather was a fisherman by trade, which is something
that I find very interesting. I've always gone fishing for leisure or sport,
but I can't imagine fishing being something that I relied on to pay my bills,
which is exactly what my grandfather did. His style of fishing was likely much
different from my own.
For instance, I'm certain that there was much more reliance
on fishing nets that could capture multiple fish at once, as opposed to fishing
poles, which are generally what I use when I'm going fishing. For me, the
thrill of the catch is probably different than what was felt by my grandfather
when he caught fish.
